XUNANTUNICH - MAIDEN OF THE ROCK

Xunantunich (Maiden of the Rock), is the second tallest Maya ruin in Belize.

Xunantunich is located about a mile across the Mopan River, in San José Succotz, a village in the Cayo District. Xunantunich (pronounced "Shoo-nan-too-nich") means "Stone Woman" in the Maya language. The "Stone Woman" refers to the ghost of a woman alleged by several people to have inhabited the site.

Xunantunich was a ceremonial site, built of limestone during the maya period (approximately 200 - 600BC).

The main area of Xunantunich occupies about one square mile and consists of six plazas surrounded by more than 26 temples and palaces. One of its structures, the pyramid known as "El Castillo" is the tallest pyramid at 130 feet above the plaza. It has such carved friezes on its east and west sides and, from its tallest point, you can observe the entire area, nearby villages (San Jose Succotz, Calla Creek, Corozalito), Benque Viejo Town, and our neighbours from Guatemala (Melchor de Mencos).
